Tromsø Bridge: can you walk across it?

Yes. Tromsøbrua is a free walking route from the city centre to the Arctic Cathedral, with wide views across the sound. If you are deciding between walking and taking a bus, the weather and the current bridge works are the details that matter. Here is how to plan the crossing.

The short answer

Is the Tromsø Bridge walk worth doing?

Yes, if you are already heading to Tromsdalen and the weather suits a walk. The crossing gives you a changing view of Tromsøysundet, the harbour and the city on the island. It turns the journey to the Arctic Cathedral into part of the outing, with no ticket or fixed opening time to arrange.

The bridge is an exposed route with a steady rise and descent. If walking is uncomfortable for your group, take a bus and check its route for your date in Svipper’s journey planner. A bus is also a sensible fallback when conditions are icy or windy.

Walk it as a route

From central Tromsø to the Arctic Cathedral

Start near the northern end of the city centre and follow the pedestrian approach onto the bridge. Use the marked walking path across Tromsøysundet, then continue into Tromsdalen for the Arctic Cathedral. Visit Tromsø puts the walk from the city centre to the church at about 20 minutes; the bridge itself is just over one kilometre long, so we would allow 15–20 minutes for the crossing alone, more if you stop for views.

From the cathedral, the Fjellheisen cable car lower station is roughly another 15 minutes on foot according to Visit Tromsø. That makes bridge, cathedral and cable car a natural sequence, but check the cable car’s operation before committing to the full walk.

Access update · October 2026

Is Tromsø Bridge open during the works?

Pedestrians and cyclists can still cross. Tenk Tromsø says the bridge is closed to ordinary vehicle traffic while the cycle path is widened, with work scheduled through 1 November 2026. Around active work areas, walkers may be directed through a protected temporary lane. Follow the signs on site rather than an older photo of the pavement.

Bus routes vary by time of day during this period. Visit Tromsø says scheduled buses cross from 07:00 to 17:00 and use the Tromsøysund Tunnel outside those hours. Check Visit Tromsø’s transport update and Svipper shortly before travelling. This work schedule is time sensitive and should not be assumed for a later trip.

Conditions change the plan

Walking the bridge in winter

You can use the pedestrian route in winter, but give yourself more time than a summer crossing. Check the weather before leaving, wear shoes suited to ice and keep the path clear when taking photos. The bridge is high above open water, so a windy day can feel very different from a sheltered walk through the centre.

If the pavement is uncomfortable or visibility is poor, you can still visit the Arctic Cathedral by public transport. Check the live journey planner because the 2026 works change bus routes and stop patterns.

A little context

Why the bridge matters to Tromsø

Tromsø Bridge links the island city centre with the mainland across Tromsøysundet. It opened in 1960 and measures 1,016 metres, according to the bridge project. The walking and cycling path was added later, in 1981. That link is why the Arctic Cathedral and the city centre are easy to combine in one outing on foot.
