Tromsø Cathedral: how to visit the wooden church in the city centre

The church beside Storgata is easy to pass on a walk through Tromsø. Go inside for its warm timber interior if the doors are open, or take a moment to see the building and square from outside. It is a different place from the Arctic Cathedral across the sound.

The short answer

Is Tromsø Cathedral worth visiting?

Yes, if you are exploring central Tromsø on foot and enjoy historic buildings. The cathedral is a short stop rather than an excursion: look at its wooden exterior from the square, then go in if visitor opening coincides with your walk.

If the interior is your main reason for coming, check the church’s current opening information first. It remains a working church, and funerals, holidays and other activities can affect access.

A little context

What makes Tromsø Cathedral different?

The cathedral was completed in 1861. Visit Tromsø describes it as Norway’s only Protestant cathedral built in wood. Its timber walls, tall steeple and position in the heart of town give it a very different feel from the concrete Arctic Cathedral in Tromsdalen.

This is Tromsø domkirke, an active Church of Norway cathedral. The name causes a common mix-up: the more photographed, triangular Arctic Cathedral is officially Tromsdalen Church and stands on the opposite side of the sound.

What you will see

What is inside Tromsø Cathedral?

Inside, take time to look at the exposed wooden structure above the nave, the galleries, the stained-glass windows and the altar. The space feels intimate compared with its tall exterior. A quiet visit is a good way to notice the details without rushing through a list of exhibits.

Photography and access may be limited during worship or other church activities. Follow the signs and the guidance of staff on the day.

Plan the visit

Opening hours, entry and events

Open church: The church currently lists Tuesday and Friday, 12:00–16:00, for ordinary visitor opening. Holidays, funerals and other activities are exceptions. Summer hours from June to August are announced separately, so do not assume the regular pattern applies to a summer trip.

Services and concerts: A service or performance is a different visit from an open-church stop. Check the church calendar for the exact date, time and any event-specific entry arrangements.

Time to allow: About 15–30 minutes inside is our estimate for a relaxed look. If the church is closed, you can still see its exterior during a walk through the centre. Check the admission terms for your visit, especially if you plan to attend a concert.

Finding the entrance

Where is Tromsø Cathedral?

It stands in the city centre beside the Storgata pedestrian street. Visit Tromsø says the main entrance faces Storgata and places it about a two-minute walk from the tourist information office. It is straightforward to add to a central walking route, and you do not need a car for this stop.

From the square, make sure you are heading to the wooden cathedral in town. If your map sends you across Tromsø Bridge to Tromsdalen, it is taking you to the Arctic Cathedral instead.

Avoid a mix-up

02
