Verdensteatret Tromsø: where can you see a film now?

Verdensteatret is a beautiful old cinema and a good choice if you would rather spend an evening with a film than another tour. There is one detail to check first: its historic auditorium is temporarily closed. The Cinemateket is still screening films, but in autumn 2026 its regular shows are at Aurora Kino Fokus. You can still see the original building on Storgata and visit its bar.

Check before setting off

Where are Verdensteatret films showing?

For autumn 2026, go to Aurora Kino Fokus, Grønnegata 100, for the Cinemateket’s regular screenings. They are in screen 5, according to Verdensteatret. The original auditorium at Storgata 93 B closed in March 2026 after damage was found in the roof structure. The reopening date is uncertain.

The bar in the old building’s foyer remains open while the auditorium is closed. A stop for the façade and a drink is still possible, but do not plan on seeing the 1916 cinema hall or its murals until it reopens. Check the current venue update ↗

The short answer

Is Verdensteatret worth visiting?

Yes, if you love cinema or want a small piece of Tromsø’s history during a city walk. See the old façade on Storgata, perhaps combine it with Perspektivet Museum next door, and check the Cinemateket programme for a film that suits you. If your main reason for going is to sit inside the historic auditorium, wait for an official reopening notice.

The Cinemateket is run by the Tromsø International Film Festival. Its programme mixes classics with newer films chosen for their artistic value, so it is a different evening from a standard first-run multiplex visit. The programme is published month by month; browse it before choosing a date ↗

A century of film

Why is the old cinema special?

Verdensteatret opened on 4 June 1916 as Tromsø’s municipal cinema. It was built for silent films, with an auditorium of 216 seats. The venue describes it as Norway’s oldest municipal cinema still used for film; that description refers to its long history, while the hall itself is currently closed.

City architect P. Arnet Amundsen designed the building. Inside, Sverre Mack’s 1921 wall paintings draw on Norwegian folk tales. They are part of what makes the hall worth seeing when it reopens, but the current closure means you cannot count on viewing them during this visit.

Pick the right screening

Tickets, prices and subtitles

As checked on 16 October 2026, a regular Cinemateket film ticket costs NOK 130. Student and senior tickets cost NOK 120 with valid ID. The venue also lists separate prices for children’s screenings, film clubs, opera and other special events, so use the price on your particular film page rather than assuming the standard rate.

Buy a Verdensteatret/Cinemateket ticket through its own website or TicketCo before you go. The cinema says all of its ticket sales are online. Although regular films are currently shown at Aurora Kino Fokus, Aurora says its own ticket desk does not sell Verdensteatret tickets.

Check the language before paying. Many films have Norwegian subtitles, while some have English subtitles. The film listing’s Språk (language) box tells you what applies to that screening. Read the Cinemateket’s English visitor information ↗

Keep the evening simple

How do you fit it into a Tromsø visit?

For the historic building, head to Storgata 93 B, beside Perspektivet Museum. Look at the façade and check Verdensteatret Bar’s current hours ↗ if you want to stop inside the foyer. The closed auditorium is separate from the bar.

For a Cinemateket screening this autumn, use Aurora Kino Fokus, Grønnegata 100, next to Tromsø Library. The two places are both central, but they are not the same entrance. If you have a film ticket, follow the address and screen number shown on the event page. See Aurora Kino Fokus’s address ↗
