The short answer
- Current surface conditions decide whether to fit them
- Choose a size that stays secure on the boot
- Walk with shorter controlled steps
- Remove grips on indoor floors
When they help
Freeze-thaw conditions can leave hard ice beneath a thin layer of snow or water. Grips are useful on city slopes, paths and the walk to a meeting point.
They do not make steep or untreated terrain appropriate for every traveller.
Choose and fit them
Use a product made for the footwear shape and test the fit before relying on it. Loose rubber or poorly positioned metal can create a new trip hazard.
Carry them in a small waterproof bag after removal.

Indoor rules
Metal traction can damage floors and become slippery on tile, stone or vehicle steps. Remove it at the entrance and follow operator instructions.
Mobility and balance
Travellers with balance, joint or mobility concerns should treat traction as one part of the plan. Shorter routes, taxis, walking poles or assistance may still be appropriate.
Our planning rule
Carry ice grips as a conditional tool rather than wearing them continuously. They help on icy outdoor surfaces but can be slippery or damaging indoors.
- Choose a model that fits securely over your actual boots
- Remove grips inside shops, hotels and vehicles
- Use small steps and handrails even when wearing traction

FAQ
Are ice grips always necessary?
No. Carry them and decide from the actual surface.
Can I wear them inside?
Usually not; they can damage floors and reduce grip indoors.
Do snow boots replace grips?
Good tread helps, but hard ice can still require additional traction.
Can I buy them in Tromsø?
They are commonly sold in winter, but stock and size are not guaranteed. Bringing a tested pair is simpler.
Do ice grips make every winter surface safe?
No. They improve traction on some ice but do not remove fall risk on slopes, mixed surfaces or steps.
