The three settings that control the result
Aperture controls how much light reaches the sensor, shutter speed controls both brightness and movement, and ISO amplifies the recorded signal. Change one setting at a time and check the histogram as well as the rear-screen preview.
A very long exposure can turn a structured, fast-moving aurora into a featureless green cloud.
Focus before the display becomes strong
Autofocus often struggles with a dark sky. Switch to manual focus, magnify a distant light or bright star on the screen and adjust until it is sharp. Infinity is a starting point rather than an instruction to turn the ring as far as possible.
Check focus again after moving the tripod or changing lenses.

A practical starting setup
Use manual mode, shoot RAW when available, open the lens to a low f-number and begin around ISO 1600–3200 with a five-to-fifteen-second exposure. Take a test frame and react to the actual sky.
Bright moonlight, snow and strong aurora may require a lower ISO or shorter exposure.
Phone photography
Modern phones can produce useful results in night mode when held completely still. Use a small tripod, avoid digital zoom, clean the lens and tap or lock focus on a distant point when the camera allows it.
A phone may combine several frames automatically, so moving aurora can look softer than it did in person.
Composition matters more than green sky
Include mountains, a shoreline, a cabin or a person to give scale. Keep the horizon level and leave enough room for the aurora to develop.
Use a dim red light around other photographers and do not repeatedly shine a bright torch into their frames.
Cold-weather camera management
Cold reduces battery performance. Carry charged spares inside an inner pocket, avoid breathing on the lens and protect the camera from snow.
When returning indoors, condensation can form on cold equipment. Place the camera in a closed bag before entering and allow it to warm gradually.
