The case for the first full day
An early position leaves more opportunities if marine weather cancels the tour or the operator offers rebooking. This matters when whales are a central reason for the trip.
The trade-off is fatigue, unfamiliar meeting points and the effect of a late or disrupted flight.
The case for the second full day
A city or orientation day first allows the group to recover, locate the quay and buy any missing clothing or medication after professional advice.
The later booking still needs at least one spare day if a second attempt matters.
Protect the evening before
Whale tours often start early and last much of the daylight period. Avoid a long aurora chase immediately beforehand, especially with children or motion sensitivity.
Build the contingency
Read the cancellation and missed-sighting terms. A spare day is useful only when another departure has capacity and the booking can move.
Keep a city, museum or short fjord alternative for the released day.
